Ora Cogan | Hard Times, Vast Feelings | Friday, October 22nd

The STAG will be presenting Vancouver based musician and songwriter Ora Cogan’s first ever solo exhibition. Hard Times, Vast Feelings features a collection of recent drawings, paintings and other works on paper.
Having recently returned from a European tour, Ora turned to visual work to reflect and develop images, myths and dreams that more commonly occupy a place in her songwriting. Evoking early 20th century book illustration, the alchemical surrealism of Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst, Eastern European and American folk art, and the haunting dream spaces of the Brothers Quay and Grimm, Ora’s imagery is familiar and beyond our grasp. Implying narrative and yet torn from their context, they tell stories with out beginnings or endings.
There will be an opening reception for Hard Times, Vast Feelings on Friday, October 22nd at 7pm featuring live music by Mongst & more tba.
Ora Cogan was born and raised on Salt Spring Island, BC where she cultivated her musical and artistic practice through her teens. Over the past few years Ora has begun touring worldwide and collaborating with Folk and Experimental artists including: Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, The Be Good Tanyas, Rio en Medio, Daniel Lercher and Anni Rossi. Ora also co-founded Cornerstone, an A’cappella gospel quartet with Frazey Ford, Matt Anderson and Khari McClelland and has been a member of Her Jazz Noise Collective in Vancouver. Her most recent record, “The Quarry,” was released on Isolated Now Waves/Borne Recordings in 2010.
